Oak Brook, Illinois

Originally designed in 1922 by William Langford, Butterfield Country Club is nestled in Oak Brook, IL.  William Langford was known for bold contours, shapes and patterns-signature features reminiscent of another legendary designer, Seth Raynor.  Steve Smyers has become well versed over the years restoring courses to their original charm and character.   The Smyers remodel not only took the layout  back to its original style, but the new plan highlights key features such as ridges, hillsides, valleys, and streams as key features, while keeping the modern game in mind.  The project lengthened the courses, strengthen the courses, and improved the aesthetics, shot making, and playability of the courses.  The renovation created a facility which garners the highest esteem in the golf community and included an 18-hole routing (composite course) of significant strength and length.  Butterfield Country Club is ranked in Golfweek's Top 200 (2012).

TWINEAGLES GOLF CLUB (THE EAGLE)                                                                            Naples, Florida

In 2010, work began to renovate the existing "Aerie" Course.  The course needed a renovation that would relocate greens to increase visibility and variety, redefine landing areas for more shot options and other design refinements.  The solution was to shape holes and orient tees, landing areas and green complexes to the natural movement offered by the lakes, woodland edges and dome-shaped wooded wetland areas.  In addition to the complete renovation a new name was given to the course...The Eagle.

As a result of the renovation, this classically designed course hosted the 2012 CME Group LPGA Titleholders Tournament.  Smyers and his design associate, Patrick Andrews consider The Eagle Course a true work of art that makes the most of the natural setting. Like their historical mentors, they adapted the holes to fit the land – and lengthened the historical layouts to accommodate modern equipment.

In 2013, the American Society of Golf Course Architects announced The Eagle Course as one of six courses to receive the distinguished "Design Excellence" recognition.  All of the nominations were reviewed by a panel of golf industry leaders, including representatives of the Club Managers Association of America, Golf Course Superintendents Association of America, Golf Course Builders Association of America, National Golf Course Owners Association and “Golf Digest” architecture writer Ron Whitten. Read more...

The course also received "Best New US Private Course of the Year" by Golf Magazine.

  The Fort

Fort Myers, Florida

Fort Myers Country club, a Donald Ross design that opened in 1917, with Bahia grass fairways and common Bermuda greens, was modernized and reopened in October 2014.  Steve Smyers and his chief design associate, Patrick Andrews, were charged with updating the classic Ross course for the City of Fort Myers, which operates the club as a municipal, daily-fee facility.

"We approached this project as if Ross came back and designed a course on the same site", says Smyers.  "If Ross were alive today-given the modern playing equipment, turf grasses, maintenance practices and all other changes that have evolved in golf over the last hundred years-I am confident he would not design a golf course on this property exactly as he designed in the early 1900s".
